In the month of June to August, Unit Ko-kurikulum of JPN Sarawak has organised the Karnival e-MAS 2.0. There were various types of competitions throughout the three months and the English teachers have sent a few students to join some of them such as Poetry Writing Competition, Storytelling Competition, Public Speaking Competition and Product Review Competition.
A) Poetry Writing Competition
Listed below were the students who took part in the Poetry Writing Competition. We were pleasantly surprised that these students could write poems in English as we had never sent any representative before.

FRONTLINERS, YOU’RE
MY HEROES! |
One boy from 6M, Gerard @ Qayyum won first place in the inter-school round and we were extremely proud of him. He represented SK Astana and also PPD Kuching towards the division. Although he did not win anything in the division round, we are still very proud of how far he had accomplished as it was the first time SK Astana championed other national schools in an English poetry writing competition.
B) Storytelling Competition
Two pupils from 4B participated in the competition. They were Nur Ain Khadijah binti Norzavly Sham (Story Title: Lazy Kebayan) and Jennessa Abigial Charles Alan (Story Title: Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder).
With the guidance of their English teacher, they practised at home how to add different sound elements, place their hands and make different facial expressions. Both parents were very supportive and helped in recording videos of them. Congratulations to the pupils for a job well done!
C) Public Speaking Competition
For this competition, we would like to commend Muhammad Syamil Danish bin Moktar from Year 4B for being courageous to take part in it. It was his first attempt at a public speaking competition and he worked hard from home preparing himself in the prepared speech section.
Although he did not manage to win it, it was still a very valuable experience for him and he thoroughly enjoyed himself. We would like to thank his parents for helping him and preparing him at home.
D) Product Review Competition
One pupil from Year 6B was brave enough to join this competition. Adlina Syahmina binti Ali, a quiet and shy girl, took part in it and was guided by Ms Margaret, her English teacher.
Adlina was given tips on how to review a product. Her teacher helped by correcting her pronunciation and stress of words. At home, her sister and parents guided her and helped to take videos of her reviewing her favourite food. Both parties showed great effort in ensuring that Adlina had a good experience of this competition. We hope that this will inspire her friends to never be afraid to try new things in the future.
