Karnival e-MAS 2.0

In the month of June to August, Unit Ko-kurikulum of JPN Sarawak has organised the Karnival e-MAS 2.0. There were various types of competitions throughout the three months and the English teachers have sent a few students to join some of them such as Poetry Writing Competition, Storytelling Competition, Public Speaking Competition and Product Review Competition.

A) Poetry Writing Competition

Listed below were the students who took part in the Poetry Writing Competition. We were pleasantly surprised that these students could write poems in English as we had never sent any representative before.

FRONTLINERS, YOU’RE MY HEROES!

One boy from 6M, Gerard @ Qayyum won first place in the inter-school round and we were extremely proud of him. He represented SK Astana and also PPD Kuching towards the division. Although he did not win anything in the division round, we are still very proud of how far he had accomplished as it was the first time SK Astana championed other national schools in an English poetry writing competition.

B) Storytelling Competition

Two pupils from 4B participated in the competition. They were Nur Ain Khadijah binti Norzavly Sham (Story Title: Lazy Kebayan) and Jennessa Abigial Charles Alan (Story Title: Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder).

With the guidance of their English teacher, they practised at home how to add different sound elements, place their hands and make different facial expressions. Both parents were very supportive and helped in recording videos of them. Congratulations to the pupils for a job well done!

C) Public Speaking Competition

For this competition, we would like to commend Muhammad Syamil Danish bin Moktar from Year 4B for being courageous to take part in it. It was his first attempt at a public speaking competition and he worked hard from home preparing himself in the prepared speech section.

Although he did not manage to win it, it was still a very valuable experience for him and he thoroughly enjoyed himself. We would like to thank his parents for helping him and preparing him at home.

D) Product Review Competition

One pupil from Year 6B was brave enough to join this competition. Adlina Syahmina binti Ali, a quiet and shy girl, took part in it and was guided by Ms Margaret, her English teacher.

Adlina was given tips on how to review a product. Her teacher helped by correcting her pronunciation and stress of words. At home, her sister and parents guided her and helped to take videos of her reviewing her favourite food. Both parties showed great effort in ensuring that Adlina had a good experience of this competition. We hope that this will inspire her friends to never be afraid to try new things in the future.

Online English Language Storytelling Competition 2021 (Every Child Has A Story To Tell 2.0)

One pupil from Year 3K, Aniq Al-Asyraf bin Azwienuddin, took part in the Online English Language Storytelling Competition 2021 organised by mangoSTEEMS Malaysia. Under the guidance of Ms Golinsia during the PdPR, Aniq chose the book 'The Boy Who Cried Wolf'.

With the help of his parents and the teacher, Aniq recorded his story and it was sent to the organiser to be evaluated. It wasn't an easy feat for him to do the task as it was his first time attempting an online competition, but he did very well.

Aniq was awarded an e-certificate for his effort and participation in the competition. We hope that with this valuable experience, he would try again in the coming year and also encourage his friends to join it as well.

English E-Carnival Storytelling Competition

One pupil from Year 4B, Jennessa Abigial Charles Alan, took part in the English E-Carnival Storytelling Competition organised by MELTA and University Malaysia Kelantan. Under the guidance of Ms Margaret during the PdPR, Jennessa was given a few examples of story along the theme 'Every cloud has a silver lining.'

After she had done her first draft of storytelling, the teacher guided her by pointing out how to stress on important words, placing of hands and facial expression. Her parents were very supportive as well in taking countless videos of her storytelling.

All effort paid off when Jennessa was shortlisted as one of the winners, and the only primary school pupil from Bumi Kenyalang! Good job, Jennessa! We, Astanians, are super proud of you!

Let’s Read and Share (Book Review Competition)

In conjunction with Hari Buku dan Hakcipta Sedunia 2021 under the HIP, three pupils from Year 4B took part in the Book Review Competition under the guidance of Ms Margaret, their English and also class teacher. These pupils were Nur Ain Khadijah binti Norzavly Sham, Muhammad Syamil Danish bin Moktar and Jennessa Abigial Charles Alan.

The participating pupils were asked to choose three storybooks which they brought home to read over the weekend. These were the titles chosen by the pupils:

Ain : The Dream Machine

Syamil : The Ghost and I

Jennessa : Operation Sea Search

They were then given a book review form and guided by the teacher on how to fill it. Their parents were also asked to guide their children and they willingly did it and provided support wherever needed. They managed to record a few videos of their children presenting the book review. It wasn't easy, but it was worth it for their children to gain that experience.

A big CONGRATULATIONS to the parents, pupils and teacher for the combined effort! Hopefully, more pupils will be encouraged to join this kind of competition in the future.
